What is beard oil and what does it do?
Beard Oil Explained
A common question people ask is what actually is beard oil and why do I need it? Here at That Guy Beard Care, we're here to answer the most important questions when it comes to why you need to add this to your daily routine.
Beard oil can be seen as an added extra that people do not need, but ask yourself this question...am I content with an unkempt looking beard that's constantly itchy and doesn't feel nice? If the answer is no, chances are you need beard oil! Depending on the ingredients, there are several benefits to using beard oil not only for your beard, but for the skin underneath which is often neglected.
Beard oils are often made with a mixture of essential oils and carrier oils, sometimes include fragrance oils to help enhance the scent. Below, we explain what all these words mean.
Carrier oils
Carrier oils provide a lot of nutrients your beard/skin needs. These include things such as Jojoba oil, Argan Oil, Coconut oil etc. They also help dilute the essential oils as on their own, they are often concentrated, a little bit like drinking a shot of squash,..no one wants that! Different carrier oils have distinct functions so take this into consideration when choosing the right beard oil for you. Oils such as jojoba are great for growing a fuller beard, keeping your skin moisturised and helping prevent acne. If you struggle with clogged pours, look out for non-comedogenic carrier oils as this will help prevent that.
Essential oils
Essential oils are predominantly where the scents come from. They are concentrated plant extracts and carry different scents and can be used for aroma therapy and most of all, for hair/skincare. They can be pressed or steamed from parts of a plant (leaves, bark, flowers or fruit) to capture the elements that produce the aroma. Essential oils are often filled with vitamins your hair and skin need for healing and recovery, setting you on the right path to a luscious beard.
Fragrance oils
It's amazingly easy to get fragrance oils confused with essential oils. These are synthetic, chemical based fragrances that provide aroma but no therapeutic benefits. They are often found in perfumes and form the base for the different scents you get from a lot of perfume brands. For skin-based products however, they can often be the cause of skin irritation, adverse reactions and breakouts. A lot of beard care brands will use fragrance oils as they want to focus more on the aroma than the benefits and they are also cheaper to produce. Often, you can tell the difference between essential oils and carrier oils by their names. Essential oils will typically have a Botanic name such as Lavandula Angustifolia for lavender as compared to 'Candy Floss'. Best way to think of it is...have you ever seen candy floss growing in the wild?! At That Guy Beard Care, all our products are made with essential oils and no fragrance oil in sight, ensuring you can get as many benefits as possible without compromising on quality.
